If so, how would you include AI to improve user\/learner experience?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A: <\/strong>Oral history has been around \u201cforever\u201d because once people learned to talk, they never shut up. Just kidding. Sort of. People have been talking longer than they have been writing, and certainly longer than typing, swiping, or whatever else you may be doing with your technology interfaces today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So why don\u2019t we just talk to computers?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of my favorite characters, C-3PO, is so good at talking, he is a master communicator. Just ask him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How many languages do you speak?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/H8OI-NVMVa8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Star Wars: Episode VI &#8211; Return of the Jedi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In so many social \u201cfirst contact\u201d scenarios, speech is the primary method of interaction. This is often fictionalized in movies to provide a visual such as Jane and Tarzan\u2019s awkward introduction in English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jane meets Tarzan\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JeOU5xrCNp0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tarzan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Or even the classic first contact in Close Encounters. I dare say most people are, so why don\u2019t we make a technology interface that mimics the way we interface with each other? By talking. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) via Natural Learning Processing (NLP) coupled with text-to-speech (TTS) and speech-to-text (STT) the interface to technology, the \u201cHuman-Computer Interface\u201d (HCI) becomes one where very little prompting is required and people will be able to interact with the system naturally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, when we interact with each other (us humans that is) we are assuming the cognitive intelligence of our conversation mate is at a level that we can adapt to and match. For example, we don\u2019t talk to a small child the same way we do to a seasoned engineer, medical doctor, or even elderly family members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the fact that we can communicate verbally is established, the level at which we can communicate follows rather quickly. For example, when playing around with the voice input to Google Assistant one quickly goes from \u201cTell me the weather, please.\u201d in a very formal tone to \u201cWhat\u2019s the score from last night\u2019s Braves game?\u201d in a very common, conversational tone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wouldn\u2019t it be great if we could talk to our computers the way we talk to each other, and they talk to us the same way? For example, Captain Picard (the human) and Lt. Commander Data (the AI android) here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"star trek - follow orders\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FRKI0A43Sn8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Star Trek: The Next Generation: Season 5, Episode 1 &#8211; Redemption, Pt. 2<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While conversational computing is great, we also need to be sure that it doesn\u2019t get us into a pickle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) - I&#039;m Sorry, Dave Scene (3\/6) | Movieclips\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Wy4EfdnMZ5g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">2001: A Space Odyssey<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>HAL could use some of Data\u2019s insight and reflection on what he\u2019s done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sort of like AUTO, short for Autopilot, the Axiom\u2019s first officer. AUTO doesn\u2019t \u201ccooperate\u201d with the captain due to his override orders, but he doesn\u2019t just lock him outside the ship either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Directive A113 - Wall*E (HD) (SPOILERS)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IJWc4PD317w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">WALL-E<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Hopefully, while we can certainly have our conversational AI help us, we don\u2019t give it total control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI should be used to enhance and enrich HCI, but while the AI learns to work with us, we should also learn to work with the AI. When that happens, the AI can then start to realize some of the things that we see today in science fiction. Things like instantly downloading new skill sets into our brains, even if from remote locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Neo Uploads Knowledge Into His Head In The Matrix Movie\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/w_8NsPQBdV0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Matrix<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Clark discusses different types of futuristic interfaces (Clark, 2020) including a nod to Neuralink\u2019s direct digital implants, or brain-computer interface (BCI). BCI is certainly a step up from HCI. While the Neuralink BCI was on the horizon when Clark mentioned it in 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/neuralink-brain-implant-elon-musk-transparency-first-patient-test-trial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">it\u2019s in today\u2019s headlines<\/a>. Just imagine where it\u2019ll be tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we have BCI sockets in our heads, maybe, we\u2019re closer to Neo\u2019s and Trinity\u2019s quick-feed lessons than we realize. If so, maybe if we need to fly a chopper at a moment\u2019s notice, we\u2019ll just have to ask. The interesting thing is, there is no keyboard or mouse (at least as we know it today) in any of these fictional examples and spoken language is the primary interface. The AI required for the computer to understand these scenarios is here and getting better every day.
